Inside Traffic Counts JOHO
Traffic Count Images
The Maine
Department of Transportation operates a network of about 70 traffic
count and classification sites around the state. The link will take you
to their map of Maine where you can see the locations of the sensors and
can learn how MDOT has integrated JOHO into their web site. JOHO
generates and updates all of the images on their site with a single
script that the analyst runs each time he downloads the counts from the
sensors. The images here show the result of
grouping all vehicles counted by the sensor together in a single total
for each hour. We illustrate the traffic patterns at an Interstate 95
site, including the difference between directions. We also show an image
of traffic on a busy road near a shopping mall to show a very different
daily and seasonal traffic pattern. MDOT uses images like these to monitor
the sensors, to understand traffic patterns that are not adequately
described by statistical models, and to schedule maintenance operations
that will affect traffic flow on busy roads. Because traffic count
information is one of the most requested items for MDOT, they hope to
make such information available to the public in a more effective and
timely manner through their web site. We recommend that you begin your tour
of JOHO images with these traffic count images. The
images and accompanying text provide a good introduction to JOHO's
concepts and the details of the layout of the other traffic images.
